We are going to rent some of the rooms in the house that we live in. My husband owned the house before I met him so it is in his name (jointly with his mother). It is not in my name. Can the rooms be rented with me as live in landlord, so I can collect the income and pay my own tax on it completely separate from him? Money will go into my account and be used to pay off debts I have. My husband and I live together in the house and I do not work.
The income must go to the owners of the asset being your husband and his mother. Do bear in mind that they could potentially benefit from the Rent A Room Scheme where they could receive £7,500 tax free. Conditions apply to this; read more at https://www.gov.uk/rent-room-in-your-home/the-rent-a-room-scheme
