According to a briefing paper published in December 2017 by the House of Commons Library, in 2017 there were 5.7 million private sector businesses in the UK.
This was a 4% increase on the 2016 figures.
On average the number of businesses has increased by 3% each year since 2000 meaning that in 2016 there were 2.2 million more businesses in the UK then in 2000; an increase of a massive 64%.
That’s 4.3 million businesses with no employees.
Even more fabulous is that fact that the number of sole proprietorships (businesses with no employees – one person limited company or self employed sole traders) has grown by an enormous 84% since 2000!
Overall 96% of businesses have fewer than 10 employees.
Running a business and Entrepreneurship truly is alive and kicking in the UK
